You get a notification by email, yes, but then when you log in - where it says 'you have no new messages' - should say you have a NEW private message or 2 or 3 whatever it may be.
I know for a fact I have 2 new messages because I sent them in a test (including to myself), but it doesn't tell me - until I click into the Private Messages - and then it points to the new ones. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
